The unit protected, in open order, or artillery deployed to fire, for each soldier shot by artillery or infantry, immediately rolls a dice that we will call "Saving throw". If he gets a number smaller than or equal to the one required in the table, the soldier is saved. With double protection (Light Infantry in open order in the edge of the woods ) you do not make a saving throw twice but only once according to the table.
Higher than fire unit 1
Cavalry that suffers the Canister or in Charge 1, 2
Infantry or cavalry in open order 1, 2
Infantry behind a light cover or at the edge of the forest 1, 2
Artillery deployed to fire 1, 2
Infantry inside woods 1, 2, 3
Light Infantry in the edge of the woods 1, 2, 3
Artillery deployed behind light cover 1, 2, 3
Units repaired by low walls 1, 2, 3
Artillery behind a trench 1, 2, 3, 4
Infantry behind High or fortified walls 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Imagine that we have a line of 12 Grenadiers firing at an enemy infantry unit protected by a row of bushes. The twelve toy soldiers are on four bases aligned with each other and can shoot two dice.
We roll two 6-sided dice, and the dice give us 1 and 4. The Grenadiers would hit with 1, 2, 3, and 4. This result would be enough to cause two losses and eliminate the soldiers. The defending infantry, however, is protected by bushes and then rolls two dice (for the two loses suffered) and obtains 2 and 3. The light cover protection test is valid with 1 and 2. One loss is safe, and for the other one the elimination is confirmed.
